The 5 biggest mistakes people make planning bucket-list trips (and how to avoid them)

I've helped plan trips to Machu Picchu, Bali, Santorini, the Maldives, and dozens of other dream destinations. Here's what I see people mess up over and over:

1. Going during peak season without realizing it

Machu Picchu in July? You're sharing the ruins with 5,000 other tourists. The sweet spot is shoulder season — same views, half the crowds, better prices. For most destinations, that's 4-6 weeks before or after peak.

2. Booking the "top rated" hotel instead of the right neighborhood

A 5-star hotel in the wrong part of Bali means you're spending half your trip in traffic. Location > luxury, every single time.

3. Over-scheduling every day

The best travel moments happen when you have space — a random street food stall, a conversation with a local, stumbling into a hidden beach. Build in at least 2-3 hours of unplanned time daily.

4. Ignoring local SIM cards and cash

International roaming is a scam and many of the best spots are cash-only. Get a local SIM at the airport and pull cash from an ATM immediately.

5. Not talking to anyone who's actually been recently

Blog posts from 2019 won't tell you that your favorite restaurant closed or that a new trail opened. Real-time intel from recent travelers is worth 10x any guidebook.

That last one is exactly why I built Plan Your Voyage — a community of adventure travelers sharing real, current intel on the world's best destinations. Curated guides, insider tips, and a crew that actually goes places.

If you're tired of planning trips off outdated blog posts, come check it out.
