Why 90% of portfolio outreach DMs get ignored (it's not your work)

I've reviewed a lot of portfolios and outreach DMs from artists trying to break into galleries, agencies, and freelance clients. The work is almost never the problem. The DM is.

Here's the pattern I see over and over:

Mistake #1: Leading with "Hi, I'm an artist, here's my portfolio."

This says nothing. Every gallery and art director gets 50 of these a week. You have one line before they scroll past. Lead with a specific observation about their work or program, then connect it to what you do.

Mistake #2: No clear ask.

"Let me know what you think!" isn't an ask — it's a dead end. Every message needs one specific next step: a call, a studio visit, a submission link. Make it easy to say yes to something small.

Mistake #3: Going silent after the first "not right now."

Most artists treat "not the right time" as a no and disappear. It's usually just a timing objection. The right move is a value-add follow-up 3-4 weeks later — not a "just checking in," but something new: a piece, a show, a press mention. Silence is the #1 reason promising leads go cold, not rejection.

Mistake #4: No system.

If you're tracking outreach in your head or a random notes app, you're losing leads. A simple tracker (who, when, what response, next follow-up date) turns random shots in the dark into a real pipeline.

The artists who get traction aren't necessarily the most talented — they're the ones who treat outreach like a repeatable process instead of a one-off cold email. Worth fixing before your next round of submissions.
