The One Thing Most Postpartum Ab Exercises Get Wrong
Here's something no one told me until I was deep into recovery: most "postpartum ab exercises" don't account for doming at all.
Doming is that visible ridge or bulge along the center of your belly when you exert effort. It means the pressure inside your abdomen is pushing through weakened connective tissue — and it's the clearest signal that a movement is too much, too soon.
The problem? Most exercise lists just say "do these 10 moves" without teaching you how to tell if a movement is actually appropriate for YOUR body right now.
What actually matters isn't the exercise — it's how your body responds to it.
Three things changed everything for me:
1. Learning to read the doming signal. Once you know what doming looks like and feels like, you can self-assess any movement in real time. No more guessing.
2. Simple bracing and breathing cues. Not complicated physical therapy jargon — just practical, repeatable cues you can run through in 10 seconds before any rep. Exhale-on-effort. Gentle brace. Check the midline.
3. A quick self-check before exercise. Instead of following a generic list, asking: "Does this movement feel stable? Am I seeing doming? Can I breathe through it?" If the answer is no, you modify. Simple.
I put everything I learned into a single cheat sheet — something you can print, save to your phone, and glance at before any workout or rehab session. No modules. No long course. Just the cues and guidance that actually matter.
If you're postpartum and want to stop second-guessing every movement, the Postpartum Core Control Cheat Sheet is built for exactly this.
