Why your best career opportunities won't come from LinkedIn cold outreach

I spent two years sending LinkedIn connection requests to people in my industry. Maybe a 5% reply rate, and most of those went nowhere.

What actually changed things: a standing weekly video call with the same group of professionals, no agenda, just drinks and conversation. Turns out people refer you, hire you, and partner with you after they've actually talked to you — not after they've seen your headline.

A few things I've learned running this format for a while:

  • Keep the group small enough that people remember names (15-25 people max per session)

  • Rotate a loose theme each week (career pivots, negotiating raises, startup war stories) so there's always a natural conversation starter

  • No pitching, no selling — the second someone starts recruiting for their MLM, the vibe dies

  • Consistency beats hype — same day, same time, every week, so it becomes a habit not an event

If you're building a professional network right now and it feels like cold outreach isn't working, it's probably not you — it's the format. Real relationships need repeated, low-stakes contact. That's it. That's the whole insight.
