The 3 exercises every beginner should master first

I've been a PE teacher for years, and I see the same thing every time someone new walks into a gym: they either grab the heaviest dumbbell they can find, or they spend 45 minutes on a treadmill and call it a day.

Neither works long-term. Here's what actually does.

1. The Bodyweight Squat

Before you touch a barbell, you need to own the squat pattern. Feet shoulder-width, chest up, sit back like there's a chair behind you. If your heels come up, work on ankle mobility first. Most beginners skip this and wonder why their knees hurt 6 months later.

2. The Push-Up (done right)

Full range of motion. Chest to floor, arms locked out at the top. Can't do one yet? Start with your hands on a bench or counter — that's not a "girl push-up," that's a smart progression. I'd rather see 10 perfect elevated push-ups than 30 half-reps on the floor.

3. The Dead Hang

Grab a pull-up bar and just hang. 20 seconds, 30 seconds, build to a minute. This builds grip strength, decompresses your spine, and sets you up for rows and pull-ups down the road. Most underrated exercise in fitness.

Master these three and you've built a foundation that actually transfers to everything else. No fancy equipment, no supplements, no BS.

I built Powerful Fitness to give complete beginners a clear path from "I don't know what I'm doing" to actually being strong and consistent. If that sounds like you, come check it out.
