The #1 mistake beginners make at the gym (and what to do instead)

Most beginners walk into the gym, grab the heaviest weight they can find, and try to copy what they see on Instagram. Two weeks later, they're hurt or burned out.

I've taught PE for years and coached hundreds of people through their first real fitness journey. Here's what actually works:

Start lighter than you think you should. Your muscles don't know what the number on the dumbbell says. They only know tension. A controlled 15lb curl builds more muscle than a swinging 30lb ego lift.

Pick 4-5 compound movements and get really good at them. Squats, deadlifts, bench press, overhead press, rows. These alone will transform your physique if you do them consistently with good form.

Follow a program — don't wing it. Random workouts = random results. You need progressive overload (adding a little weight or a few reps each week).

Rest more than you think. Muscles grow when you sleep and recover, not when you're in the gym. 3-4 days a week is plenty for beginners.

If you're a beginner looking for structured guidance from someone who actually knows how to coach (not just flex on camera), I built Powerful Fitness for exactly that.
