3 Price Action Setups That Work on ES & NQ Every Week

If you trade S&P500 futures (ES) or NASDAQ futures (NQ), these three price action setups appear consistently. No indicators required — just candles and levels.

1. The Failed Breakout at Previous Day's High/Low

What it is: Price pushes through yesterday's high or low, but immediately reverses back inside the range.

Why it works: Breakout traders get trapped. Their stops become fuel for the reversal.

How to trade it:

  • Mark the previous day's high and low on your chart (most platforms do this automatically)

  • Wait for price to break through by 2-5 ticks

  • If the next candle closes back inside the range → that's your signal

  • Entry: On the close of the reversal candle

  • Stop: Beyond the failed breakout wick

  • Target: The opposite side of yesterday's range (or the midpoint for conservative targets)

Best timeframe: 15-minute chart

---

2. The Double Tap at a Round Number

What it is: Price tests a major round number (ES 5,500 / NQ 20,000) twice and reverses both times.

Why it works: Round numbers are psychological levels. Institutional and retail orders cluster there. Two rejections confirm the level is being defended.

How to spot it:

  • Price approaches a round number (xx00 for ES, xxx00 for NQ)

  • First tap: price wicks into the level, then pulls back

  • Second tap: price retests the level but fails to break higher/lower

  • The second rejection candle should show a strong wick (rejection signal)

Entry: After the second rejection candle closes

Stop: 5 points beyond the round number

Target: 2:1 reward-to-risk minimum

---

3. The Opening Range Breakout (First 30 Minutes)

What it is: After the 9:30 AM ET open, you mark the high and low of the first 30 minutes. A breakout from this range often leads to a trending move.

Why it works: The first 30 minutes is when overnight orders get filled and institutional positioning happens. Once that range is established, a breakout signals the direction for the session.

How to trade it:

  • At 10:00 AM ET, mark the high and low of the first 30-minute candle

  • Wait for a candle to close above the high (long) or below the low (short)

  • Don't trade wicks — only closes count

  • Entry: On the closing candle

  • Stop: Middle of the opening range

  • Target: 1.5x the opening range height

Important: Skip this setup on FOMC days, CPI release days, and triple witching. The opening range is unreliable when major catalysts hit.

Risk Reminder

These setups have a statistical edge over many trades — but no single trade is guaranteed. Always use proper position sizing:

  • Risk no more than 1% of your account per trade

  • Use stop losses on every trade, no exceptions

  • Start on a paper trading account if you're new to futures
