5 Things I Wish Every Adult Knew Before Their First Ballet Class

After 15 years of teaching ballet to adults, the same fears come up every single time. Here's what I tell every new student on day one:

1. You don't need to be flexible to start.

Flexibility is a result of ballet, not a prerequisite. I've had students who couldn't touch their toes on day one and were doing full arabesques within months.

2. Ballet is the hardest "easy" workout you'll ever do.

You won't be jumping around or drenched in sweat from minute one. But the controlled, slow movements will challenge muscles you didn't know existed. Your legs will be shaking at the barre — that's normal.

3. There's no age limit.

My youngest adult student was 21. My oldest was 54. The body adapts at every age. What matters is consistency, not when you start.

4. It will change how you carry yourself.

Posture, balance, grace — ballet rewires how you move through the world. My students always say the same thing: "People keep asking me if I'm taller."

5. The first month is the hardest. The second month is when you fall in love.

Every single student who stuck through the awkward first few weeks ended up loving it. Give yourself grace. You're learning a new language — with your body.

If any of this resonates, Prima Studio is where I teach. Small group, personalized, designed for adults who've never danced before.
