Yard props fail on FDM for three boring reasons
Halloween yard stuff looks huge in the slicer and still dies on a 220mm bed.
1. The part is too thin to survive a lawn.
A tombstone that looks fine at 1.2mm walls will crack the first windy night. I design porch pieces at 2.4mm+ and keep the back hollow so they print overnight, not all weekend.
2. People scale after they slice.
Scale in the slicer before supports. A raven at 80% needs different tree supports than the file at 100%. If you scale after, you get stringy wings and a weak stand.
3. PETG on a cold porch, PLA in the sun.
PLA yard props warp in afternoon sun. PETG holds shape and hates a wet first layer. Dry the spool. First layer 0.28mm. Don't chase speed on the brim.
If your printer is the bottleneck — not the file — a 1-hour remote session is enough for bed, flow, and one successful test print. That's it. No retainer.
