What nobody tells you about breaking into PM (that I wish I knew earlier)

Most people trying to break into product management are doing it wrong.

They spend months reading product books, grinding frameworks, and obsessing over "the perfect case study" — then wonder why they're getting ghosted in interviews.

Here's what actually moves the needle:

Stop trying to become a "perfect PM candidate." Start solving real problems.

The best PM interview stories come from real work. Build something, even small. A browser extension. A Notion template that 50 people use. A discord bot. Anything where you made a product decision and can talk about the tradeoff.

Recruiters have heard "I analyzed Spotify's onboarding and here's what I'd change" 10,000 times. They haven't heard "I shipped a feature, 40% of users ignored it, here's what I learned."

The frameworks are a trap.

RICE, HEART, ICE — knowing these gets you through screening. It won't get you the offer. What gets you the offer is showing you can think, communicate a tradeoff, and handle pushback without crumbling.

Network before you need to.

Most PM roles are filled through referrals before they're posted. A 15-minute Zoom with a PM who likes you is worth 50 cold applications.

If you're trying to break in and want a structured path — not another YouTube rabbit hole — this is what Product Academy is built for. Coaching, real feedback, and a community of people on the same mission.
