The net worth tracker that got me to actually start investing

For the longest time I "knew" I should be investing but never actually did anything because I didn't know where I stood financially. No spreadsheet, no tracker, nothing.

What finally moved the needle: I stopped trying to build the perfect budget and instead built one number I could check monthly — net worth. Assets minus liabilities. That's it.

Once you're tracking that one number every month, two things happen automatically:

  1. You start noticing which habits actually move the number (paying down a card, an extra $100 into an ETF) vs. which don't.

  2. You stop needing motivation. The number either goes up or it doesn't, and that becomes the whole game.

If you're at the "I know I should invest but haven't started" stage: skip the 40-tab budgeting spreadsheet. Track one number. Build from there.

I put together the exact templates I use (budget sheet, simple investing framework, net worth tracker) into a small PDF kit if anyone wants a shortcut — but even without it, start with the one number. It's the highest-leverage 10 minutes you'll spend on your finances this month.
