Most developers use Claude Code wrong. Here's what actually works.
After months of using Claude Code daily, I noticed a pattern — the difference between mediocre AI output and genuinely useful code always comes down to how you write the prompt.
Here are 3 quick wins anyone can apply right now:
1. Give it the full picture, not just the task
Instead of "write a function that validates emails", try describing the context: what framework you're in, what edge cases matter, what the function feeds into. Claude Code performs dramatically better with context.
2. Ask it to think before it writes
Prompts like "Before writing code, outline your approach as bullet points" consistently produce better architecture. The model catches edge cases it would otherwise miss.
3. Use it as a reviewer, not just a writer
Paste your existing code and ask Claude to find bugs, suggest refactors, or identify performance issues. This is where it genuinely saves hours.
I've compiled my best 20 prompts that cover scaffolding, debugging, testing, refactoring, and automation — all battle-tested across real projects.
