The 3 messages that kill Discord community churn (and most owners skip all of them)

Ran the numbers across a handful of paid Discord/Whop communities I've helped set up automation for. The pattern is always the same: the communities that retain members aren't the ones with the best content — they're the ones with the best messaging cadence.

Three touchpoints matter more than anything else:

1. The first 10 minutes. If a new member doesn't get a warm, specific welcome message within minutes of joining, your day-1 churn risk roughly doubles. Generic "welcome to the server!" bot messages don't count — it needs to reference what they bought and what to do next.

2. Day 3-5 "quiet member" check-in. Most cancellations happen because someone joined, got overwhelmed or distracted, and never came back. A short, non-salesy nudge around day 3-5 ("saw you haven't checked out X yet, here's the fastest way in") recovers a meaningful chunk of at-risk members before they even think about cancelling.

3. The pre-renewal value recap. Right before a renewal charge, members who get a "here's what you got this month" recap cancel less — because you're reminding them of value right when they're (subconsciously) evaluating whether to stay.

Most creators write zero of these. The ones who write all three consistently see noticeably flatter churn curves.

If you're running prompts/bots for this stuff, these three moments are where to spend your effort first — not another engagement event or another piece of content.
