The #1 mistake beginners make when prompting ChatGPT (and the fix)

Most people write prompts like they're texting a friend: short, vague, and hoping ChatGPT reads their mind. Then they get a generic answer and blame the AI.

Here's the fix — every good prompt needs 4 things:

  1. Role — tell it who to be. "Act as a senior copywriter" gets a wildly different answer than no role at all.

  2. Context — give it the situation. Audience, goal, constraints. The more specific, the better the output.

  3. Task — one clear instruction. Don't bury the ask in three paragraphs.

  4. Format — tell it exactly how you want the output (bullet points, table, word count, tone).

Example of a weak prompt: "Write me a sales email."

Example of a strong prompt: "Act as a direct-response copywriter. I sell a $29 digital ChatGPT prompts bundle to beginners who want to save time using AI. Write a 150-word sales email with a punchy subject line, one clear CTA, and a casual but confident tone."

Same AI. Completely different result.

If you want to skip the trial and error, I put together 1,000+ prompts already structured this way across coding, business, marketing, writing, and more — happy to answer questions if anyone's curious how they're organized.
