Your fridge is probably the most expensive appliance in your kitchen. Here's how to tell if it's on its last legs — before you wake up to a puddle on the floor.

1. It's running constantly

If the motor never shuts off, the compressor or condenser coils are likely struggling. Clean the coils first (back or bottom of the unit). If that doesn't help, you're looking at a compressor issue.

2. Food is spoiling faster than usual

Your fridge should hold 37-40°F. If food goes bad early even at the right setting, the thermostat or sealed system could be failing.

3. Excessive condensation or frost buildup

Moisture on the outside means the door seal is worn. Frost inside a frost-free freezer means the defrost system is broken — usually the heater or timer.

4. It's making weird noises

Buzzing, clicking, or humming that won't stop usually points to the compressor, evaporator fan, or condenser fan motor.

5. It's over 10 years old and needing frequent repairs

At that point, repair costs start stacking up. Sometimes a new unit is the smarter investment — but get a diagnostic first before you decide.

Most of these issues are fixable if caught early. The key is not ignoring the warning signs.
