Why 'reading' the Quran and 'understanding' it are two completely different skills

Most of us learned to read Quran as kids — Arabic letters, tajweed rules, the makharij. That's a real skill and it matters. But somewhere along the way, a lot of us stopped there, and now we can recite beautifully but couldn't tell you what half of what we just read actually means.

Here's the thing: understanding isn't a 'scholar-only' skill. You don't need 10 years of Arabic to start. A few things that actually moved the needle for me:

  • Pick ONE surah you already have memorized and just read the English tafsir for it. You'll be shocked how much you're already reciting without knowing.

  • Context first, translation second. Knowing WHY a verse was revealed (asbab al-nuzul) changes how you read it completely.

  • Don't try to 'finish' tafsir like a book. Take one ayah a day. Depth beats speed here.

I'm building out a free space (and a YouTube channel) around exactly this — daily reflections, breaking down verses in plain English, for people who can already read Quran but want to actually sit with the meaning. If that's you, come hang out.
