The 5 biggest mistakes people make organizing their home gym
I've helped dozens of people reorganize their garage and basement gyms. Same mistakes keep coming up.
1. Buying storage before measuring. That dumbbell rack looks great online until it blocks your deadlift platform. Measure your workout zones first, storage second.
2. Floor storage only. Walls are free real estate. Pegboards for bands, wall-mounted barbell holders, overhead shelving for plates you use less often. Think vertical.
3. No dedicated zones. Dumbbells mixed with cables mixed with cardio gear. Group equipment by movement pattern — push, pull, legs, cardio. You'll flow between exercises faster.
4. Ignoring temperature and humidity. A dehumidifier costs $40. Replacing a rusted barbell costs $300. Protect your investment.
5. Overbuying equipment. Most people need a rack, barbell, adjustable dumbbells, a bench, and bands. That's it. Nail the storage for those before adding more.
The difference between a garage gym and a training facility is organization. Get that right and you'll actually want to train every day.
