The one thing I wish someone told me before my kid turned 13

Nobody prepares you for it.

One day your kid is laughing at your jokes. The next, you're the most embarrassing person on the planet. Their phone becomes a wall between you. Every conversation feels like defusing a bomb.

I spent years figuring this out the hard way — through arguments, silent treatments, and a lot of "I don't care, dad."

Here's what actually changed things:

Stop trying to control. Start trying to connect.

Teenagers don't rebel against rules. They rebel against feeling unheard. The moment I started asking genuine questions instead of giving lectures, everything shifted.

Three things that actually work:

  1. Ask "what was the hardest part of your day?" instead of "how was school?" — It invites real conversation.

  2. Let them be wrong sometimes. Controlled failure builds resilience better than any speech.

  3. Pick your battles ruthlessly. Messy room? Let it go. Disrespect? Never.

I write about this stuff every week in my newsletter — real strategies from a real parent in the trenches. No fluff, no judgment, just what actually works.

If you're raising a teen and sometimes feel like you're losing the plot — you're not alone.
