Why Your Daiquiri Tastes Different Every Time (And How to Fix It)

Most home bartenders follow recipes. They measure 2 oz rum, ¾ oz lime, ¾ oz simple — and wonder why it tastes different every single time.

The problem isn't the recipe. It's that recipes ignore the most important variable: dilution.

A daiquiri shaken for 8 seconds vs 15 seconds is two completely different drinks — even with identical ingredients. The ice you use, the temperature of your tin, the speed of your shake — all of it changes the final product.

The 2:1:1 ratio approach

Instead of memorizing recipes, professional bartenders think in ratios:

  • 2 parts spirit

  • 1 part citrus

  • 1 part sweet

This is the classic sour template. The daiquiri is its purest expression.

But the ratio is only half the equation. The other half is understanding exactly how much water your technique adds to the drink — and making that number consistent.

The stir count method

Once you understand your dilution rate, you can build a repeatable stir count — a fixed number of stirs or shake duration that hits the same dilution target every time.

No more guessing. No more "this one tastes off." Just precision.
