The real cost of your daily standup isn't the 15 minutes

It's the 10 minutes after where someone asks "wait, what did we actually decide?" and nobody has a clean answer.

I've been building Recap (a bot that transcribes and summarizes Discord voice meetings) and the biggest thing I learned building it for my own team first: meeting notes fail for one of two reasons.

  1. Nobody owns taking notes, so nothing gets written down.

  2. Someone owns it, but they're half-listening because they're too busy typing, and the notes are garbage.

Both problems disappear if the notes just... happen. No one assigned, no one distracted, and it's consistent every single time.

For small startup teams doing daily syncs, the compounding effect is bigger than people expect. A missed action item on day 1 becomes a blocked PR on day 3 becomes a missed deadline on day 10. Async accountability only works if there's a paper trail, and most teams don't have one because writing it down is annoying.

If you're running standups on Discord and constantly re-litigating "who said they'd do X," that's usually a notes problem, not a discipline problem.

Curious how other teams handle this — do you have a dedicated notetaker, or does it just... not happen most days?
