Why most creators plateau at 10k followers (and it's not the algorithm)

I've worked with a lot of creators stuck in the same spot: decent content, consistent posting, but growth flatlines around 5-10k followers. Every time, it comes down to the same three things — and none of them are "post more."

1. You're optimizing for likes, not retention. Platforms don't care how many people like a post — they care how long people stay and whether they come back. A post that gets 50 likes but holds attention for 40 seconds beats one that gets 500 likes and gets scrolled past in 3.

2. You don't have a offer behind the content. Content without a monetization path is a hobby. The creators who break through treat their audience like the top of a funnel from day one — even if the "offer" is just an email list or a $9 product.

*3. You're inconsistent in positioning, not just posting.* Switching niches, tone, or format every few weeks resets the algorithm's understanding of who to show you to. Growth compounds when the platform can predict your content.

If you're a creator trying to break past a plateau — happy to talk shop in the comments. What's the biggest bottleneck you're hitting right now?
