Why 90% of 'vintage' sneaker listings online are lying to you

Spent the last year buying and reselling vintage sneakers before starting Relic Row, and here's the pattern I kept seeing on generic marketplaces: sellers slap "vintage" on anything pre-2015 and buyers have zero way to verify condition, year, or authenticity before money changes hands.

A few things I learned sourcing pairs that actually held resale value:

  1. Box condition matters more than people think. A deadstock pair with a crushed or missing box loses 15-20% of value instantly to serious collectors.

  1. "Rare" isn't the same as "discontinued." Plenty of discontinued colorways were overproduced. Rarity comes from low regional distribution + a specific year, not just being out of stock now.

  1. Direct seller communication beats blind checkout every time for anything over $150. Condition photos, sizing quirks, yellowing — you want to ask questions before you buy, not after.

That last point is basically why I built Relic Row instead of just using a generic resale app — buyers get direct chat access with sellers before committing. If you're into the space, come poke around.
