5 Things Nobody Tells You Before Moving to Nairobi

I've helped dozens of expats relocate to Nairobi. Here's what catches everyone off guard:

1. "Nairobi traffic" is not an exaggeration.

Your commute dictates your life. Pick your neighborhood based on where you work, not what looks good on Google Maps. Karen to Westlands during rush hour? Budget 90 minutes.

2. The rental market moves fast — and agents matter.

Good apartments in Kilimani, Lavington, and Westlands get snapped up in days. Having a connected agent isn't optional, it's the difference between settling and scrambling.

3. Cost of living is wildly variable.

You can spend $800/month or $5,000/month depending on your lifestyle. Eating local keeps costs down dramatically. Western-style groceries at Carrefour or Naivas will run up your bill fast.

4. Security compounds aren't scary — they're standard.

Almost every middle-to-upper-tier apartment has guards and gates. It's normal. Don't let it put you off — it's just how things work here.

5. The expat community is tight.

Nairobi has one of the most active expat networks in East Africa. Church communities, coworking spaces, sports clubs — you'll find your people faster than you think.

I run a community where relocators and agents connect directly — real intel, real connections, no fluff. If you're planning a move, come say hi.

5 Neighborhoods Every Expat Should Know Before Moving to Nairobi (2026)

I've been tracking the Nairobi property market closely, especially with the wave of UN agencies relocating from Geneva and New York this year. Here's what I'm seeing on the ground.

If you're an expat, diaspora, or remote worker planning a move to Nairobi, the neighborhood you pick will make or break your experience. Honest breakdown:

1. Westlands — The "international hub." Walking distance to malls, restaurants, and the UN complex in Gigiri. Expect $800-2,000/month for a decent 2-bedroom.

2. Kilimani — Where the young professionals live. Tree-lined streets, great cafes, newer apartments. Slightly cheaper than Westlands but filling up fast.

3. Karen — Space, greenery, quiet. Family compounds with gardens. Budget $1,200-3,000/month. 30-40 min commute to CBD.

4. Lavington — Sweet spot between Karen's quiet and Kilimani's convenience. Good schools, decent landlords. Underrated.

5. Runda / Gigiri — Diplomatic zone near UN campus. Premium ($1,500-4,000/month) but unmatched security.

What nobody tells you:

  • Always negotiate rent — first price is never final

  • Ask about water supply and generators BEFORE signing

  • Get a local agent who knows the building, not just the listing

  • Budget for deposit (2 months) + agent commission (1 month)
