Your first action: Open the course and complete Lesson 1. Then drop a message in chat introducing yourself and what type of reports you work on. Let's get to work.

Most annual report tables look like someone exported a spreadsheet and called it a day. Here's the fix I use on every client engagement.

Kill the grid. Delete every single border line in your table. All of them. Now add back exactly three horizontal rules:

1. Top rule (1.5pt) — marks the table boundary

2. Header separator (0.75pt) — divides column headers from data

3. Bottom rule (1.5pt) — closes the table

That's the entire system. No vertical lines. No cell borders. No zebra striping on tables under 10 rows.

The result looks 10x more expensive because it IS what expensive design firms do. I've seen Fortune 500 annual reports that still use full gridlines — and they look worse than a startup that follows this rule.

One more thing: always right-align numerical data and use tabular figures so your decimal points stack perfectly. Left-aligned numbers in a financial table is an instant credibility killer.

These two changes alone — minimal rules + proper number alignment — will put your report layouts in the top 10% of what's out there.
