Most people walk past free curb furniture because it looks beat up. That's exactly why it's free. Here's how to spot the pieces actually worth grabbing:

1. Check the weight. Solid wood furniture is heavy. If a dresser feels like it weighs nothing, it's likely particleboard or veneer over MDF — skip it. A genuinely heavy piece is almost always solid hardwood underneath the grime.

2. Look at the drawer joints. Pull a drawer out. Dovetail joints (the interlocking zigzag pattern at the corners) mean it was built to last — usually decades or older. Stapled or glued corners mean cheap modern construction, no matter how "vintage" it looks painted up.

3. Scratch a hidden spot. Use a key or coin to scratch the underside or back panel. If you see real wood grain under the finish, you've got something worth refinishing. If you see a printed wood-pattern peeling off, that's laminate — still usable for some projects, but it won't take stain.

Ugly finish + heavy + dovetails = a $20 curb find that can become a $200+ sale after a weekend of sanding and staining. That's the whole game.
