5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me When I Started Dancing
I've been teaching dance for years, and I see the same mistakes over and over from beginners. Here's what would've saved me months of frustration:
1. Your posture is your foundation.
Every style — hip hop, contemporary, salsa, anything — starts with how you carry your body. Shoulders down, chest open, core engaged. Fix your posture and everything else gets 10x easier.
2. Musicality > Memorizing choreography.
Knowing when to hit a beat matters more than knowing a million moves. Put on any song and just listen before you move. Count the beats. Feel where the accents land. This is the skill most people skip.
3. Film yourself. Seriously.
What you think you look like and what you actually look like are two different things. Film a 30-second freestyle every week. You'll be shocked at your progress after a month.
4. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
Drilling a move at half-speed until it's clean will always beat rushing through it sloppy. Your muscle memory doesn't know the difference between "practiced fast" and "practiced wrong."
5. Dance alone before you dance with others.
Solo practice is where the real growth happens. Put on a playlist, close the door, and move without judgment. That's where you find YOUR style.
I built Rhythm Pulse Academy around these exact principles — body awareness first, musicality second, choreography third. If you want a structured path from zero to performing a full routine in 4 weeks, that's exactly what we do here.
