The 3 mistakes every beginner cyclist makes (and how to fix them)

I've been coaching beginner cyclists for a while now, and I see the same three mistakes over and over. If you're new to cycling and serious about getting faster, read this.

1. You're riding too hard, too often.

Most beginners go out and hammer every ride. Then they wonder why they're always tired and not improving. 80% of your rides should feel easy. That's not a suggestion — that's how every pro trains. Build your aerobic base first.

2. Your saddle height is wrong.

A saddle that's too low wastes energy and destroys your knees. Too high and you're rocking side to side. Quick test: sit on the bike, put your heel on the pedal at the bottom of the stroke. Your leg should be fully extended. When you clip in normally, you'll have a slight bend. Done.

3. You're ignoring cadence.

Grinding a big gear at 60 RPM feels "strong" but it's inefficient and murder on your joints. Aim for 85-95 RPM. It'll feel weird at first — stick with it. Your endurance will thank you.

These three fixes alone will make you a better cyclist within a month. No gadgets needed, no expensive coaching.

I'm building RideSharp as a free community for beginners who want to level up their riding. Structured plans, technique tips, and a crew of riders all growing together. Come through.
