I come from calligraphy. The discipline of controlling a nib across paper — pressure, angle, flow — translates directly to how I think about rigging. Every bone placement is a deliberate stroke. Every constraint is a rule that creates freedom, not limitation.

Why most Blender rigs break — and the 3 habits that fix it

Most character rigs in Blender fail for the same three reasons. After rigging professionally and teaching dozens of students, I see the same patterns every time.


1. Skipping the skeleton plan


People open Blender, add an armature, and start extruding bones immediately. No reference. No joint mapping. No naming convention.


The fix: Spend 10 minutes with your character's concept art. Mark every joint. Decide your naming convention before you place a single bone. DEF-, MCH-, CTRL- prefixes aren't optional — they're what keep a 200-bone rig from becoming a nightmare.


2. Relying entirely on automatic weights


Automatic weights are a starting point, not a solution. They consistently fail at the shoulders, inner thighs, and anywhere geometry overlaps.


The fix: Auto-weight first, then immediately inspect every deformation zone. Use the weight paint gradient tool with Subtract mode to clean bleed between vertex groups. Test with extreme poses — if it looks wrong at 90°, it'll look worse in animation.


3. No constraint hierarchy


Throwing IK chains onto bones without planning the control flow creates rigs that fight themselves. Cyclic dependencies, flipping poles, broken FK/IK switches.


The fix: Map your constraint logic before applying anything. IK targets need clear pole targets. Every Copy Rotation needs a defined space. Build custom bone shapes for your controls so animators can actually use what you build.
