Most HSE students enter the field thinking certifications are everything. They're not.

Here's what actually matters in your first 3 years:

1. Communication > credentials.

A site inspection means nothing if you can't get supervisors to fix the hazard. Practice writing clear, concise reports from day one.

2. Root cause analysis is a skill, not a checklist.

When you find a hazard, ask why five times before writing a recommendation. Real investigation requires curiosity.

3. Build trust with operations, not just management.

The workers doing the job know the risks better than anyone. If they don't trust you, your safety program is just paperwork.

4. Keep a learning log.

Every near-miss, every audit, every site visit — document what you saw and what you'd do differently. It becomes your career portfolio.

5. Certifications open doors. Competence keeps you inside.

Get your NEBOSH, IOSH, or OSHA 30. But don't stop learning the moment you pass.
