The #1 mistake new salespeople make on discovery calls

Most new salespeople think the discovery call is about asking questions.

It's not. It's about listening to the answer.

Here's what I see over and over: a rep asks a great question like "What's your biggest challenge right now?" — and the prospect starts talking — and the rep is already thinking about what to say next. They miss the gold.

The best closers I've trained do something different. They shut up. They let the silence sit. They follow up with "Tell me more about that." And then they shut up again.

Discovery isn't a checklist. It's a conversation where the prospect convinces themselves they need what you're selling. Your job is to guide that conversation, not dominate it.

3 things you can do on your next discovery call:

  1. After every answer, count to 3 before responding. Most people will keep talking and give you the real answer.

  2. Replace "So what you're saying is..." with "Help me understand..." — it invites depth instead of summarizing too early.

  3. Take notes on their exact words. When you present your solution later, use their language, not yours.

Sales isn't about being smooth. It's about making the person across from you feel heard. That's how you close.

We teach this stuff in depth inside the HTS Program — recorded courses, weekly live coaching, real leads to practice on, and a dedicated success manager to keep you accountable.
