5 mistakes everyone makes when learning Japanese (and how to fix them)

I've been teaching Japanese for years, and I see the same patterns over and over. Here are the top 5 mistakes — and what to do instead.

1. Studying only kanji, ignoring grammar

Kanji is satisfying to grind, but without grammar you can't form a single sentence. Focus on sentence patterns first, then layer kanji on top.

2. Being afraid to speak

Most learners spend months reading but never open their mouth. Start speaking from day 1, even if it's just 「こんにちは、私は__です」. Fluency comes from output, not just input.

3. Using textbook Japanese in real conversations

Textbooks teach you polite forms (丁寧語), but real Japanese friends will speak casually. Learn both early, or you'll sound like a robot.

4. Skipping listening practice

Your ears need training just like your eyes. Watch anime without subtitles, listen to Japanese podcasts, or just let NHK News play in the background.

5. Trying to learn alone

Language is social. You need real feedback from native speakers, and you need a community pushing you forward.

That's exactly why I built Samurai Tutoring — a place where you get native tutoring, daily practice, and a global community of Japanese learners. If you're serious about leveling up, check it out 🇯🇵
