The SAT math mistake that's costing juniors 100+ points

I've spent a lot of time looking at where students actually lose points on the SAT, and it's almost never "not knowing the material." It's this:

Most juniors study by doing untimed practice problems until they "get" a concept, then walk into a timed section and fall apart. The SAT isn't really testing whether you know the Pythagorean theorem — it's testing whether you can pull it out of memory in under 90 seconds while three other problem types are competing for the same mental space.

The fix that actually moves scores: stop doing isolated untimed drills after week 2. Switch to timed mixed-section sets immediately, even if you're only getting 50% right at first. Your brain needs to build the switching skill, not just the knowing skill. Score jumps come from speed under pressure, not from knowing more formulas.

Second thing worth saying: a 1400+ score is not about being a genius at every section. It's about having zero weak sections. Most kids who plateau in the 1200s-1300s have one section dragging them down 150+ points below the other two. Find that section, throw disproportionate time at it, and the total score moves fast.

If you're prepping for an SAT in the next 2-3 months, that's exactly the window where this approach compounds. Happy to answer questions on strategy in the comments.
