The #1 AI automation mistake founders make at $5K-$50K/month
I run "Scale with AI," and the #1 mistake I see founders at $5K-$50K/month make with AI isn't "not using it" — it's using it wrong.
Most people bolt AI onto a broken process. They get ChatGPT to write their client emails but still copy-paste them one by one. They build a "bot" but still manually review every output before it goes out. That's not automation — that's just a slower way to do the same manual work.
Here's the actual framework that's worked for us:
1. Map the task before you touch AI. Write out every step of the process by hand first. If you can't describe it in 5 steps, AI can't automate it either — you need to simplify the process first, not the tooling.
2. Automate the boring 80%, keep the judgment 20%. Client onboarding is a good example — data collection, contract sending, calendar booking = automate completely. The actual sales conversation = still you, for now.
3. Measure hours saved, not "AI usage." If a workflow doesn't give you back at least 3 hours/week, it's not worth maintaining. Kill it and move on.
The founders scaling past $50K/month right now aren't the ones with the fanciest AI stack — they're the ones who ruthlessly cut manual steps out of every repeatable process in their business.
What's the one task in your business you know is repeatable but still do by hand?
