The 3-Bucket System: How I Ended Screen Time Wars With My Teen

After 2 years of daily arguments about phones, tablets, and "just 5 more minutes," I discovered something that changed everything.

The problem isn't screen time. It's unstructured screen time.

Most homeschool parents try to limit hours. That creates a power struggle. Instead, I started categorizing screen time into 3 buckets:

🪣 Bucket 1: Creation Time

Your teen produces something — edits a video, codes a project, designs graphics, writes a blog post. This is the highest-value screen time.

🪣 Bucket 2: Guided Learning Time

Structured educational content tied to your weekly theme — documentaries, interactive lessons, research projects. You choose together.

🪣 Bucket 3: Free Time

Social media, gaming, YouTube rabbit holes. Yes, they still get this. But it's earned and bounded.

The Magic Ratio

I use a 40/60 split — 40% digital (Buckets 1-2), 60% offline. When teens see they're earning their Bucket 3 time through Buckets 1-2, the negotiation disappears.

The Weekly Theme Wrapper

Each week gets a theme — "Documentary Filmmaking," "Startup Week," "Nature Science." The theme makes planning effortless and gives teens something to get excited about.

This is exactly what I teach inside ScreenTime Academy. The full system, templates, negotiation scripts, and a community of parents doing the same thing.

No more daily battles. Just a structured system that works. 🎯
