Why I built an app that fines you for scrolling too much

Every screen-time app I tried had the same flaw: the "limit" was fake.

You hit your cap on Instagram, a little popup shows up, and you tap "Remind me in 15 minutes" or "Ignore Limit" and you're back in the feed in one second. There's no actual cost to breaking the rule you set for yourself. It's a suggestion, not a limit.

So I built ScrollToll. Same idea — you set limits on the apps you're trying to quit — but when you go over, you pay an actual toll. Real money, out of your account, into savings or a charity of your choice. Not points, not a streak number that resets quietly. Money.

The other half of it is social. Screen time is a habit you break in isolation, which is exactly why it doesn't stick. ScrollToll has a members community (Screen Time Gym) where people post their streaks, their wins, and yes — their tolls paid — so there's accountability beyond just your own willpower.

Turns out combining "this will actually cost me something" with "other people are watching my streak" works a lot better than a grayscale mode ever did.

If you've tried and failed with screen time limits before because they were too easy to ignore, this is built for you. Would genuinely love feedback from anyone who's tried similar approaches.
