The 3 edits that make your content look 10x more expensive (without a fancy camera)
I edit photos/thumbnails for creators all day, and the gap between 'looks like a phone pic' and 'looks like a brand shoot' is almost never the camera. It's these three things:
1. Color grading, not filters. A filter slaps the same tint on everything. A grade adjusts shadows, midtones, and highlights separately so skin tones stay natural while the background pops. Takes 2 minutes once you know your target look.
2. Cropping for the platform, not the moment. A YouTube thumbnail needs the subject's face taking up ~40% of the frame with room for text on one side. An IG post can breathe more. Same photo, different crop = completely different perceived quality.
3. Cleanup before color. Stray hairs, background clutter, skin blemishes — fix these FIRST. If you grade a messy photo, you just get a well-lit messy photo.
Most creators skip straight to filters because it's the fastest visible change, but it's actually the least impactful step. Do cleanup → crop → grade, in that order, and the difference is night and day.
If you're just starting out and don't have time to learn all this yourself, that's literally what I do for people over at Shen Studio — happy to answer questions here either way.
