The $80 mistake most detailers make on every ceramic coating job

I used to lose money on every single ceramic coating job without realizing it — because I was skipping a $15 step and it was costing me $80+ in comebacks.

Here's the mistake: applying coating right after polishing, using the same panel wipe I used mid-polish.

Polishing oils and fillers leave a residue on the clear coat that your eyes can't see but the coating can absolutely feel. If you don't do a dedicated final wipe with an actual ceramic prep solvent (not just IPA), the coating bonds inconsistently. A few months later you get streaky decay, water spotting in weird patches, or a client calling about "the coating wearing off already" — when really it never fully bonded in the first place.

The fix that changed my callback rate:

  1. Finish polishing as normal

  2. IPA wipe to knock down surface oils

  3. THEN a dedicated ceramic-prep solvent wipe, fresh microfiber, straight-line passes only

  4. Only after that second wipe do I open the coating bottle

Sounds like overkill. It's 10 extra minutes per vehicle. It's also the difference between a coating that survives 2 years and one that survives 5+, and it's the difference between a client who refers you and one who leaves a bad review because "the ceramic didn't work."

If you're getting inconsistent coating results and you're not sure why — check this step first before you blame the product.

Curious what other detailers in here do for their final pre-coat wipe. Anyone using something different that's worked well?
