What running a neighborhood cyber cafe taught me about 'boring' businesses

Everyone's chasing SaaS and content businesses right now, but I want to make a case for the boring, unglamorous local service business — because that's what Shri Sai Net Cafe is, and it's been steady for years.

A few things I've learned:

  1. Recurring, unavoidable demand beats hype. Students need exam forms filled every single semester. Locals need Aadhar/PAN updates constantly. This demand doesn't depend on trends — it's baked into daily life.

  1. Trust is the entire moat. Anyone can put a PC and a printer in a shop. What keeps people walking back in is knowing you won't mess up their government form or lose their documents. That reputation takes time to build and is very hard for a competitor to copy.

  1. Small margins, high frequency. A single print job or form fill is a few rupees. But multiply that by daily foot traffic across months, and it adds up to a durable, cash-flow-positive business — no funding rounds needed.

  1. Community > marketing. I've never run an ad. Every customer came from someone else in the neighborhood who vouched for us.

If you're building something local — a cafe, a repair shop, a tutoring service — don't feel like you need a flashy pitch. Solve a real, recurring problem well and consistently, and people will keep coming back.
