I've taught photography to a lot of total beginners, and the pattern is always the same: people buy a $1,200 camera, watch 40 YouTube tutorials, and still never earn a cent from it.

Here's why: they're learning gear, not business.

A beginner with a $400 camera who books 3 test shoots for friends and posts them will out-earn a beginner with a $3,000 setup who never shows their work to anyone.

The fastest path from zero to your first paid gig:

1. Master manual mode in a weekend. Aperture, shutter speed, ISO — that's it. Stop watching gear reviews.

2. Shoot 3 free/discounted sessions for people you know. Portraits, pets, products — doesn't matter. You need real photos of real subjects, not test shots of your coffee mug.

3. Build a 10-image portfolio from those shoots. Pick your best, most consistent work — one style, not a mixed bag.

4. Price your first paid shoot at $50-100. Not free, not $500. You need proof people will pay you, and that price point gets yeses.

5. Repeat until referrals start coming in.

Most people quit at step 2 because posting unfinished work feels vulnerable. Do it anyway — nobody has ever hired a photographer whose portfolio didn't exist.
