The #1 mistake I see beginner badminton players make (and it's not their swing)

Been coaching badminton for a while now, and almost every beginner makes the same mistake: they focus all their practice time on hitting harder, when the real skill gap is footwork.

Here's the thing — in badminton, you have a fraction of a second to react and get into position before you even swing. If your feet aren't in the right spot, it doesn't matter how good your technique is. You'll always be reaching, off-balance, or late.

A few things that actually moved the needle for my beginner students:

  • Split-stepping before your opponent contacts the shuttle, not after

  • Practicing the 6-corner movement pattern without a racket first, just to build the pattern in your legs

  • Always recovering to center court after every single shot — even in practice rallies

Most people skip footwork drills because they're not as fun as smashing. But footwork is what separates 'plays badminton' from 'good at badminton.' Start there, and everything else gets easier.

If you're picking up a racket for the first time this year, work on your feet before you work on your arm.
