The 3 mistakes every beginner badminton player makes (and how to fix them)

I've watched hundreds of beginners play badminton. The same three mistakes show up every single time — and they're all fixable.

1. Holding the racket too tight

Most beginners death-grip the handle thinking more force = more power. Wrong. A loose, relaxed grip gives you more wrist snap — that's where real power comes from. Drill: hold a pen loosely and flick it. That's the motion.

2. Standing flat-footed

You can't move fast from flat feet. Weight should always be on the balls of your feet, knees slightly bent, ready to push in any direction. If your heels are down while waiting for a shot, you're already too slow.

3. Watching the shuttle instead of the opponent

Beginners track the shuttle the whole rally. Good players watch their opponent's body and racket to predict where the shot is going. Train your eyes to look forward, not up.

Fix these three things and your game jumps a level — guaranteed.

If you want structured instruction from the very beginning, I run ShuttlePro — a badminton coaching membership built for beginners. Grip to game strategy. šŸø
