Starting a trade? You're about to spend a LOT of money on tools. Most apprentices blow their first paycheck on gear they'll regret within 6 months. Here's what I've seen after years on site:

1. The cheapest drill on the shelf

You think you're saving money. You're not. It dies in 3 months and you buy another one. Get a mid-range 18V brushless from a reputable brand. You'll have it for 5+ years.

2. A 200-piece "everything" bit set

90% of those bits are useless. Buy a quality 30-piece set with the sizes you'll actually use daily. Replace individual bits as they wear.

3. A massive tool bag instead of a proper belt

If you're on your feet all day, carrying a 15kg bag around is killing your productivity. Invest in a decent tool belt with the 10 things you use most. Bag stays in the ute.

4. Cheap tape measure

This one's serious. A wobbly tape measure means bad cuts. Spend the extra $10 on one with a solid hook and a blade that doesn't fold.

5. Brand-name everything from day one

You don't need top-shelf everything. Some things (like levels and chalk lines) work fine from budget brands. Save the premium spend for impact drivers, circular saws, and safety gear.

The trick isn't spending more — it's spending smart. Know where quality matters and where it doesn't.
