Why You Can't Fall Asleep (It's Not What You Think)

Most people who take 60+ minutes to fall asleep blame the same things: screens, caffeine, stress.

Those matter — but they're not the root problem.

The real issue is sleep onset delay, and it works like this: your brain has a narrow window where it's genuinely ready to transition into sleep. Miss that window, and you enter a second-wind state where falling asleep becomes significantly harder. The longer you lie there trying, the worse it gets — because now your brain associates the bed with frustration instead of rest.

Here's what actually fixes it:

1. Identify your sleep readiness window. There are specific signals your body sends when the window is open. Most people either ignore them or don't know what to look for.

2. Run a consistent pre-sleep sequence. Not "wind down" advice — a specific checklist you complete in the same order every night, timed to land you in bed exactly when the window opens.

3. Handle the racing mind separately. Thought loops at bedtime are a distinct problem that requires a distinct technique. Trying to "relax" doesn't work because relaxation isn't the opposite of rumination.

I built a full system around this called the 15-Minute Lights-Out Checklist. It covers all three pieces in a practical, step-by-step format — no theory dumps, no vague wellness advice.

If you're consistently taking 45+ minutes to fall asleep, this was built for exactly that problem.
