Your sleep tracker is lying to you (kind of)

Most people check their Oura or WHOOP score every morning and feel good or bad based on a number they don't fully understand.

Here's the thing: a single night's score is nearly meaningless. What matters is the trend.

I've analyzed hundreds of sleep profiles and the pattern is always the same:

The 3 things that actually move the needle:

  1. Consistent wake time — your circadian rhythm doesn't care about bedtime, it anchors to wake time. Fix this first, everything else follows.

  1. HRV trajectory, not single readings — if your HRV is slowly declining over 2-3 weeks, you're accumulating stress (life, training, alcohol, blue light — pick your poison). One good night won't fix it.

  1. Deep sleep duration — under 60 minutes of deep sleep per night consistently means something is disrupting your slow-wave cycle. Common culprits: eating within 2 hours of bed, alcohol, or sleeping too hot.

These aren't theories. Every major sleep tracker measures these. Most people just don't know what to do with the data.

If you're a tracker owner who wants to actually understand your data and fix your sleep, we're building that community at SleepIQ. Happy to answer questions here too.
