Most “bad STLs” are a first-layer problem

I keep seeing the same photo with a different caption.


“This file is garbage.” Skirt is hovering. Corners already up. First line looks like spaghetti on a dirty PEI sheet. That is not a model problem.


A print-ready STL still fails if layer one does not stick. A mediocre STL prints fine when the first layer is locked in.


Do this before you blame the designer


  1. Wash the bed. Dish soap, water, dry. Finger oil is enough to ruin PETG.

  2. Set Z-offset until the first line is slightly squished, not round. If you can flick it off with a fingernail, you are too high.

  3. First layer at 20–30 mm/s. Speed is for layer two.

  4. Use the temperature on the roll, not the YouTube default. Cheap PLA and “generic PLA” are not the same material.

  5. If the corners lift, add a brim. Do not scale the model 2% and call it a day.


What “print-ready” actually means


Orientation is already set. Supports are only where the overhang needs them. Wall count and infill are starting points, not religion. You still have to own the first layer on your machine — Ender, Prusa, Bambu, does not matter.


If the first layer is a mess, stop the print. Do not let it run for two hours so you can post a war crime in a Discord.


Bring printer model, filament, and a photo of layer one. That diagnosis takes minutes. Rewriting the STL does not fix a dirty bed.
