5 things every beginner gets wrong in badminton (and how to fix them)

I've coached dozens of beginners and the same mistakes come up every single time. Here's what to fix first if you're just starting out:

1. Death grip on the racket. You're squeezing it like your life depends on it. Relax your fingers. Hold it like you're shaking someone's hand β€” firm but loose. Power comes from the snap, not the squeeze.

2. Standing flat-footed. Badminton is about being ready to move in any direction. Stay on the balls of your feet, knees slightly bent. If you're standing upright with your heels down, you're already too slow.

3. Using your arm instead of your wrist. Beginners swing their entire arm like a baseball bat. The shuttle is light. The power comes from wrist rotation and forearm pronation. Practice shadow swings focusing only on the wrist flick.

4. Always hitting to the center. You're making it easy for your opponent. Aim for the corners. Even if your shots aren't perfect, forcing your opponent to move to the edges of the court will win you more rallies than any power shot.

5. Ignoring footwork completely. Your feet matter more than your racket. Learn the basic 6-point footwork pattern before worrying about advanced shots. Good footwork = being in position = better shots without even trying.

If you want structured training programs to fix all of these and more, check out Smashminton Academy. We break everything down step by step for complete beginners.
