5 things I wish I knew before my first padel match

Padel is blowing up right now, and for good reason — it's one of the most fun sports you can pick up as an adult. But there are a few things that would've saved me a lot of frustration early on.

1. The walls are your friend, not your enemy.

Most beginners try to avoid the walls entirely. Bad move. In padel, using the glass is a fundamental part of the game. Start by letting easy balls bounce off the back wall and practice timing your shot off the rebound.

2. Positioning matters more than power.

You don't need a killer smash to win. Padel is a placement game. Control the net, cut off angles, and force your opponents to hit difficult shots.

3. Your tennis serve won't work here.

Padel serves are underhand. Focus on placement and spin rather than speed. A deep serve to the corner with side spin is way more effective than trying to blast it.

4. Fitness actually matters (more than you think).

A padel match can run 60-90 minutes of constant movement. Sport-specific conditioning — lateral movement, split steps, explosive recovery — makes a massive difference.

5. Play with better players as often as possible.

You'll learn more in one match with experienced players than in 10 matches at your current level. Watch how they position, when they attack, and how they recover.

I built SmashPadel to help fitness enthusiasts get court-ready with structured training programs, technique guides, and a community of players all leveling up together. If you're getting into padel, come check it out.
