What actually determines a junk removal quote (from someone who does this for a living)

Started Smith & Sons doing garage and basement cleanouts, and the #1 question I get is "why does one couch cost $89 and another cost $200?" So here's the honest breakdown of what actually drives price in this industry:

1. Volume, not weight (usually). Most crews price by how much space your stuff takes up in the truck — measured in fractions of a truckload — not by the pound. A stuffed couch and a light one take up the same space, so they cost the same.

2. Access matters more than people think. Curbside pickup is cheapest. Third-floor walk-up with no elevator? That's more labor, so expect a bump. Always mention stairs/distance when you ask for a quote.

3. Disposal fees are the hidden cost. Mattresses, tires, e-waste, and paint often carry extra dump fees because they can't go in regular landfill loads. A legit company will tell you this upfront, not surprise you at pickup.

4. "Full truckload" is a real unit, not marketing fluff. It usually means a 12-16 cubic yard box completely packed. If someone quotes you a full truckload price for a pile that's clearly 1/4 that size, get a second quote.

We run tiered pricing (single item, half load, full truckload) specifically so customers can self-estimate before booking instead of waiting on a callback. If you're clearing out a garage, basement, or rental unit and want a straight answer on cost, happy to help.
