The #1 mistake entrepreneurs make when hiring their first VA
Most people hire a virtual assistant and then wonder why it's not working.
The problem isn't the VA. It's the handoff.
Here's what actually happens: you're overwhelmed, so you hire a VA. But because you're overwhelmed, you don't have time to properly explain what you need. So the VA either does it wrong, asks too many questions, or you end up micromanaging — and suddenly you're doing more work than before.
The fix is simple, but nobody does it:
Document one task before you hire.
Just one. Pick the most repetitive thing on your plate right now — inbox triage, scheduling, research, whatever — and write out exactly how you do it. Screenshots, steps, examples.
That document becomes your first SOP. Your VA follows it from day one. They execute it exactly how you would. Zero back-and-forth.
Now you have bandwidth to document a second task. Then a third. Within two weeks, you've offloaded half your calendar.
This is how you go from "I tried a VA and it didn't work" to "I don't know how I ran my business without one."
The bottleneck was never finding the right VA. It was getting out of your own way long enough to let them do the job.
Start with one document. Everything else follows.
