4. Overfeeding treats. Treats should be less than 10% of daily calories. That "just one more" adds up fast, especially with small dogs.

5. Not pet-proofing the house. Electrical cords, toxic plants (lilies are deadly for cats), chocolate left on counters — do a sweep before your new friend comes home.
